Best Option for Most Travelers

For overseas visitors, high-speed train is usually the easiest way to travel from Shanghai or Hangzhou to Huangshan. The normal arrival point is Huangshan North Railway Station. From there, continue by transfer to Tangkou for Yellow Mountain, Tunxi downtown for hotels and old street, or Hongcun/Xidi for village stays.

Hangzhou to Huangshan

High-speed rail is often faster and simpler than road travel.

Huangshan North to Tangkou

Use a pre-arranged transfer, taxi or local bus. Private transfer is easiest with luggage.

Huangshan North to Hongcun/Xidi

A private transfer is recommended if arriving late or traveling with family.

Which Area Should You Go to First?

Go to Tangkou first if your main goal is Yellow Mountain

Tangkou is the practical base near the south gate of Yellow Mountain Scenic Area. It works well if you plan to enter the mountain the next morning.

Go to Tunxi first if you arrive late

Tunxi is better for evening arrivals, restaurants, Huangshan North Railway Station access and Tunxi Old Street.

Go to Hongcun or Xidi first if you want a village stay

This works well for photographers and slow travelers. Morning and evening light in the villages is often better than midday.

Local Transfer Tips
